Contemporary Art Update

Under the direction of Jean Robertson, Professor of Art History at Herron School of Art and Design, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and Grove Advisory Editor for Contemporary Art, our newest update focuses on globalisation and contemporary art.

Globalisation is a complex contemporary phenomenon affecting politics, economics, technology, science, and many other spheres, including visual art. By the beginning of the 21st century, the expanded influence and rate of globalisation in the contemporary art world was a significant area of study and interest. The exploding number of biennials, art fairs, publications, and exhibitions focused on international trends appeared to erase local borders of the art world and sometimes homogenise the appearance and content of art. Nevertheless, a sense of regional and national identity and geographic place continued to influence the production of contemporary art.

Articles in this update offer a starting point for investigating themes of globalisation vis-à-vis contemporary art. In addition to significant new articles on the topics of globalisation, biennials and art fairs, and Brazilian art after 1980, new and revised biographies offer a sampling of contemporary artists from around the globe working in various media and forms who are expanding the international reach of contemporary art.

The Grove Encyclopedia of American Art

This month Grove is also pleased to introduce more new articles from the forthcoming Grove Encyclopedia of American Art, edited by Joan Marter, Professor of Contemporary Painting and Sculpture at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, and Editor of Woman's Art Journal. Drawing upon the expansive scholarship in The Dictionary of Art, The Grove Encyclopedia of American Art will deal with all aspects of American art from Native American architecture to contemporary installation art. In order to uphold the relevancy and scholarly integrity of Grove Art Online, Oxford University Press is embarking on a major new program to update existing articles. We believe that maintaining Grove is a joint, ongoing effort between the scholarly community and the publisher, and we invite you to participate.

Our editorial team will be actively reaching out to Grove contributors for corrections, updates, and suggestions for revisions, and we will also flag entries that should be regularly revisited. We have thousands of authors to contact, and the contact information for most is out of date, so whether you are a contributor or not, if you see an article that needs attention, we encourage you to get in touch.
